How to Retrieve Deleted Photos from a Memory Card
Accidentally lost or deleted your digital camera pictures? Read on
Memory cards experience data loss for a number of reasons. Pretty much any time there is a disruption in the data stream, you at risk losing your pictures. This can be caused by dropping or exposing the camera to liquids, running out of batteries while the camera is in use, or accidentally formatting the memory card. Luckily, this is a fairly common problem and can be solved in a few easy steps.
Before you go any further
It’s important that you remove the damaged memory card right away. If you continue to write to the card, you risk writing over the deleted pictures. You see, when a file is deleted from a memory card, it is not actually removed. The name is removed from the file and it is hidden from view. It will only be completely removed, after it has been written over. So put in your back up memory card, and follow the next step.
Check the card for physical damage
Often times, merely cleaning the card can solve the issue. If you see any residue on the card, it’s okay to clean it with a non-abrasive material, like a microfiber lens cloth. Next connect the card to your PC or Mac, either through your camera’s usb connection, or a card reader.
Scan the card for lost images
There are a few good software programs for both PC and Mac that can scan damaged memory cards for any lost photos. Here are a few good options:
Odboso Photo Retrieval (PC only) – The free download allows users to see the pictures that can be recovered before registering. It supports all of the major media types, and has been tested with the Cybershot file system.
Disk Doctors Photo Recovery (PC/Mac) – Disk Doctors is a leader in the field of data recovery. They have offices all over the world, and have wonderful tech support and technicians available.
Precautions For Next Time
To make sure this doesn’t happen again, always keep a spare battery on hand, and change your battery as soon as you notice they are low. It is also a good idea to swap memory cards often, this way if you lost the data on one card, you haven’t lost all of your photos. Kind of like keeping your eggs in different baskets.
